The 'Cradle of Western
Civilisation' and one of the historical crossroads between East and West,
Athens is a fascinating city whose origins are lost in myth and legend.
Every corner you turn is an experience. A city of contrasts. From the
splendour of the Acropolis and Parthenon, to the bustle of Omonia Square.
Ancient theatres and modern concert halls. Shopping in sophisticated
boutiques in Kolonaki, or at the Sunday street market in Pireaus. Parks and
beaches. Fast food and friendly family tavernas. Mountains and alleyways.
Athens has it all.
No visit to Greece is complete without a visit to Athens. Even if you are
only passing through, spend a night or two. If you are staying in another
part of Greece, why not take a couple of days away from the beach and take
the bus down. Fares are cheap and the journey is usually interesting.
Where to stay - For a short stay it is best to stay at a hotel in the
centre of Athens. The area of Omonia Square is a good place as a base to
explore the city. The transport system is good. There are express buses from
the airport to Syntagma Square every 20 minutes, 24 hours per day and from
there it is only a short Metro or taxi ride to Omonia Alternatively take the
new Metro service direct from the airport to central Athens and transfer for
the rest of Athens from there. The Metro rail/underground system goes out to
the port of Pireaus, and there is a frequent bus service to Kifissus bus
station from where you can take buses to Lefkas and the rest of Western
Greece.
