Katohori Village, Lefkas
To many, Katohori is one of the most attractive villages on Lefkas.
Certainly that is the opinion of the people of Katohori, who welcome
visitors with typical friendliness and charm. You will easily adapt to the
local pace of life; so much so that you will have to make the difficult
daily decision - to leave and explore a little more of Lefkas, or relax and
spend another day in the village!
Katohori is a traditional hillside Greek village in an ideal location for
you to enjoy Lefkas. High above a lush green valley, with views south to the
next village of Poros, the sun rises across the valley in the mornings to
bathe the village in light throughout the day.
Typical narrow streets and stone built houses surround the central church,
where locals meet near the public phone and exchange stories. The local shop
provides all the basics you will need - for more you can drive to nearby
Nidri or even take the occasional public bus.
Peace and tranquility are part of the character of Katohori. With very
little traffic the main sounds are the singing of birds, the cackle of
chickens, or the occasional bray of a donkey in the valley.
The choice of what to do in the evenings is a difficult one. To stay at home
and relax on the patio, enjoying a delicious home cooked barbeque. Or take a
stroll down to the village taverna, open in the middle of the summer and
famous in the area for it's traditional grilled dishes. A meal here is not
to be rushed, but taken at leisure with a generous amount of the local
wine.. Or, for a change, perhaps take a drive down to Nidri with its large
selection of bars, restaurants and nightlife.
For a visit to the beach you have many choices within 15 minutes. Nidri and
Desimi Bay are on the East Coast with beautiful views to Meganisi, the
Islands and the mainland. The enchanting bay of Mikros Gialos, below Poros
on the south coast, provides a spectacular location for bathing in crystal
clear water and relaxing on its tree lined beach backed by pleasant tavernas.
